Tristesse du Roi is based on the same titled collage using cut out paper shapes by Matisse (1869-1964) now in the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris. For the collage Matisse used paper shapes that he had colored with gouache and then all elements were applied to a canvas. The work is considered to be Matisse's final self-portrait.
