HENRI MATISSE
Polyphème.

Etching and sound ground etching, 1935. 265x210 mm; 10⅜x8¼ inches, full margins. One of only a few impressions from the unpublished planche refusée. Signed and inscribed "planche refusée" in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression of this extremely scarce etching.

Matisse (1869-1954) worked with George Macy of The Limited Editions Club, New York to produce illustrations for James Joyce's Ulysses. The artist made ten plates for the project with subjects from Homer's Odyssey, of which six were chosen for the publication. Another impression of the rejected Polyphème is in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Duthuit 205 bis.
