HENRI PIECK (1895-1972) JAARBEURS UTRECHT. 1934. 39x28 1/2 inches. Condition A. Japan. Both an artist and an architect, Pieck was often called upon to design the posters for the yearly industrial fair held in Utrecht (see Modernist Posters sale #1897, lot 56). Instead of using drawings of factories as he most often did, here he has chosen a highly allegorical image, in a very Machine Age, Art Deco style, showing a gigantic Mercury (the god of trade) pointing a spotlight on the fair, with the huge lettering placed at the bottom. ref: The Modern Dutch Poster<>, MIT press, 1987 no. 82 p.117, another Utrecht poster.
