HENRI PIECK JAARBEURS UTRECHT. 1934. 39x281/2 inches. Condition B-: horizontal folds; staining and pinholes in corners; creases in margins and image. Both an artist and an architect, Pieck was often called upon to design the posters for the yearly industrial fair held in Utrecht (see Modernist Posters sale #1897, lot 56). Instead of using drawings of factories as he most often did, here he has chosen a highly allegorical image, in a very Machine Age, Art Deco style, showing a gigantic Mercury (the god of trade) pointing a spotlight on the fair, with the huge lettering placed at the bottom.
