HENRI TOULOUSE-LAUTREC
La Misère a Londres.

Group of 3 pencil drawings on ruled, cream wove paper, 1888. Each approximately 185x140 mm; 7 1/4x5 1/2 inches. Each with the artist's reddish orannge monogram ink stamp, (Lugt 1338, lower right recto). Ex-collection Maurice Guilbert; Mr. Galanti; and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert D. Schimmel, New York.

Published in Dortu, Toulouse-Lautrec et son oeuvre, volume VI, pages 942-43, and Joyant, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec 1864-1901 volume II, page 192.

These drawings may be seen as a reflection of the harsh living conditions present in the poorer areas of London in the late 1800s. The scenarios presented existed at the same time that the notorious Jack the Ripper roamed the streets of Whitechapel.
