HENRU TOULOUSE-LAUTREC
La Passager du 54, ou Promenade en Yacht.

Lithograph printed in olive-green with hand coloring in watercolor and pencil additions on imitation Japan paper, 1895. 640x465 mm; 25 1/4x18 1/4 inches (sheet), full margins. First state (of 3). A working proof, aside from the signed and numbered edition of 50 in this state. Signed in pencil, lower right. With the artist's red ink stamp (Lugt 1338, lower left recto, faded). Printed by Bourgerie & Cie, Paris.

The coloring, likely done by Bourgerie & Cie's chromiste, was made to test the visual affect of different colors prior to preparing the colored stones for printing. Several areas were ultimately printed in other color variations. The pencil additions correspond to the red printed highlights in the final states of the poster. The coloring was added prior to printing, as the olive-green is superimposed on the color fields.

The only other known working proof with colors is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Delteil 366; Adhémar 188; Adriani 137.
