In many of his finest posters, Gawthorn, who studied architecture before he became a painter, employed his signature, stylized graphic ability to depict the privileged classes engaging in their exclusive and elegant pastimes. His Art Deco-inspired illustrations were largely executed using flat colors and no outlining, in a manner reminiscent of Ludwig Hohlwein and Fred Taylor. For this Scottish coastal town he depicts a strikingly fashionable beach scene. Furness Vol. 1, p. 87.
