Nappenbach immigrated from Munich to San Francisco in 1885 to work as an engraver. He painted landscape and city scenes in his spare time and became known for such work, eventually landing him a job managing the art department of the American Magazine. The inscription reads, "For Bob Aitkens, from your admiring friend and Brother Bohemian, HNAP."
