HENRY O. TANNER
The Disciples See Christ Walking on the Water.

Etching, circa 1907. 185x243 mm; 73/8x95/8 inches, wide (full ?) margins. Signed and numbered 102/120 by the artist's son, Jesse O. Tanner, in ink, verso. A superb, clean impression.

Much of the printed and painted work of the African-American artist Tanner (1859-1937) deals with Biblical subject matter, testament of his upbringing as the son of a minister and his extensive travels in the Middle East. Despite working most of his career in Paris and depicting Biblical subjects during an era that witnessed the birth of Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism and other avant-garde movements, Tanner's art was widely accepted throughout America. His atmospheric depictions of religious subjects and his intimate genre scenes are indebted to Rembrandt's work.
