On his second trip to the Middle East, Tanner visited the mountain range of the Sinai Peninsula, the site of this Biblical episode. The Adoration of the Golden Calf was a popular subject among French historical artists of the 17th and 18th centuries including Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain.
