Oil on canvas, laid down on plywood, mounted to cardstock, circa 1897. 274x228 mm; 10 7/8x9 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto. With the artist's estate ink stamp, and signed by the artist's son Jesse O. Tanner in ink, verso.

Provenance: the estate of the artist; Grand Central Art Galleries, New York, with their label on the mount back, inscribed "Mr. Richard Long, Hampton Institute" in ink; Richard A. Long, Atlanta; thence by descent to his estate.

Exhibited: Georgia Collects, The High Museum of Art, Atlanta, January 24 - March 26, 1989, with the label on the frame back.

Tanner visited Venice in the spring of 1897 on his return voyage from a trip to Palestine and Egypt sponsored by Rodman Wanamaker. He made stops in several Italian cities including Venice, Naples, Rome, Pisa and Florence.
