HENRY RUSHBURY (1889-1968) JOHN CONSTABLE R.A. AT FLATFORD MILL. 1937.
40x50 inches, 101 1/2x127 cm. Haycock Press, London.
Condition B+: minor losses, restored losses, repaired tears and creases in margins; slight darkening at edges; minor creases, abrasions and light staining in image.
In honor of the centenary of John Constable's death, the London & North Eastern Railway offered art enthusiasts trips to visit places where Constable grew up and painted. Here, the artist himself is whimsically shown with his easel, within his own landscape he painted circa 1816, Flatford Mill (Scene on a Navigable River). Rushbury, like Constable, was a member of the prestigious Royal Academy. The image is a departure for Rushbury, whose other posters for the LNER primarily focused on architecture.
