HENRY THIRIET (DATES UNKNOWN) L'AFFICHE FRANCAISE.
26 1/2x19 3/4 inches. Bourgerie & Cie., Paris.
Condition A-: minor repaired tears in margins; creases and slight foxing in image.
Although he created more than half a dozen stunning posters, there is almost no biographical information about Thiriet. His was arguably the most extravagant French Art Nouveau style. Not only did he employ the trademark curves and waves of Art Nouveau (albeit ramped up to his own level), but he also often used a flashy palette to create his symbolic and allegoric scenes and images. Here a statuesque though pensive young woman is sitting on the bank of the Seine. With the towers of Notre Dame in the background, she is flipping through an album, and writing down the names of prominent poster designers with a quill pen. This small format poster was clearly meant to be hung in bookstores to advertise a new magazine dedicated to French Posters. The magazine itself was never published, making this quite a rare document. A mention of l'Affiche Francaise can be found in another French poster magazine of the time, l'Estampe et l'Affiche. But, presumably, there was no room on the market for two publications on the same subject. Affichomanie 44, DFP-II 814.
