HERBERT BAYER (1900-1985) AUSSTELLUNG EUROPÄISCHES KUNSTGEWERBE. 1927.
35 1/4x23 1/4 inches, 89 1/2x59 cm. Ernst Hedrich Nachf., Leipzig.
Condition B+: expertly-repaired tears and creases in margins; small replaced losses at edges; printer's crease at lower right edge; colors attenuated; hinged to mount. Paper. Framed.
Alongside Walter Gropius and Lazlo Moholy-Nagy, Bayer was one of the key instructors at the Bauhaus, drawing on his own studies in architecture, painting and typography to become a teacher of design and advertising. This poster predates his work with photomontage, which began when he moved to Berlin in 1928. This earlier poster, advertising an exhibition of European Arts and Crafts, is a full-throttle representation of Bauhaus typography and design. The image was also used on the cover of the exhibit's catalogue (see Swann sale 2382, Lot 25). Avant Garde p. 130, Modern Poster 96, Plakat Kunst p. 112, Word & Image p. 66, The Poster 161, Verfuhrungen 236, Gallo p. 309, Berman / Juan March p. 206, Zeitzieger p. 157, MoMA 377.1950.
