The Boeing 707 was the first mass-produced civilian jet aircraft in the United States. The plane took its maiden voyage on December 20, 1957, and was put into transatlantic service by Pan American in 1958. American Airlines began using the aircraft for transcontinental flights in 1959. The 707 ushered in the Jet-Age, and with it brought about many fundamental changes in the airline industry. The November 17, 1958, Time Magazine article entitled "Jets Across the U.S.," cited the increasing number of people flying, and the size and power of the aircraft as leading to changes in terminals, air traffic controls, ticketing and reservation systems, baggage handling, food and many other aspects of air travel.
