HERBERT GENTRY (1919 - 2003)
The Center One III.

Acrylic on canvas, 1972. 610x500 mm; 24x19 5/8 inches. Signed in red ink, upper center recto. Signed and titled in ink, verso.

Provenance: the artist's estate, New York.

This canvas is a powerful combination of Expressionism and abstract painting by an artist in mid-career. Gentry had moved to Stockholm in the late 1960s after having lived in Paris since 1946. By the 1970s, he had a well-established career as a painter in Northern Europe and Paris. He was associated with both the influential CoBrA group of Dutch painters, Karel Appel and Corneille, and a dynamic group of African-American painters living in Northern Europe, including Sam Middleton and Walter Williams. Gentry's work is a hybrid and confident expression of a modern artist who was used to traversing different cultures and forms of expression.
