Herbert Gentry painted this vigorous abstract expressionist painting towards the end of his period living in Copenhagen, Denmark. Gentry is best known for his combination of Expressionist figuration and abstraction. Gentry had moved to Stockholm in 1958, after living in Paris since 1946. Gentry had socialized with the Dutch, Belgian and Scandinavian artists of the CoBrA group in Paris. After an invitation to exhibit in Copenhagen in 1959, Gentry relocated there. By the 1970s, he had a well-established career as a painter in Northern Europe and Paris. In additon to his associaton with the Dutch CoBrA painters, Karel Appel and Corneille, he was part of a dynamic group of African-American painters living in Northern Europe, including Sam Middleton and Walter Williams.
