The multi-talented and multi-national Leslie Greener was a soldier, writer, journalist, illustrator and Egyptologist, born in Constantia, South Africa. He joined the Indian Army in 1918, and was also a prisoner of the Japanese while in the Australian Army during World War II. Throughout his career, Greener studied art and taught in multiple countries, and most notably, made a name for himself in the Egyptology field.

Helwan, a southern suburb of Cairo, was once a bustling center of therapeutic tourism. The Sulfur Center for Natural Medicine and the Treatment of Pain and Rheumatic Diseases was established there, and treatment with Helwan water dates back to the year 1899.
