HERBERT LEUPIN (1916-1999) DIE WELTWOCHE. 1949.
50 1/4x35 1/2 inches, 127 3/4x90 cm. Hug & Söhne, Zürich.
Condition A-: minor abrasions at edges; minor creases in margins and image.
Leupin is best remembered as the Swiss alter-ego to France's Raymond Savignac, in that he designed countless posters around the visual gag system. However, before he adopted that style he was a devotee of the Swiss school's neo-objectivity, designing posters in a hyperrealist style (see Swann Modernist Poster Auction 1859, lot 66). This image for a newspaper adds a symbolic idea to the formal rendering - the rolled up newspaper hanging above the earth forms an exclamation point. This simple notion comes across as a clean, strong and emphatic message. Leupin p. 117, The Poster p. 229, MoMA 491.1951.
