HERBERT LEUPIN (1916-1999) DIE WELTWOCHE. 1949.
50 1/8x35 1/4 inches. Hug & Sohne, Zurich.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins and image.
Leupin is best remembered as an artist who was the Swiss alter-ego to France's Raymond Savignac, in that he designed countless posters around the visual gag system. However, before he adopted that style he was a devotee of the Swiss school's neo-objectivity, designing posters in a hyper-realist style (see Swann Modernist Poster Auction # 1859, lot 66). This image for a newspaper adds a symbolic idea to the formal rendering: The rolled up newspaper hanging above the earth forms an exclamation point. This simple notion comes across as a clean, strong and emphatic message. Leupin p. 117.
