HERBERT LEUPIN (1916-1999) FLORIS. 1949.
50 1/4x35 1/2 inches, 127 1/2x90 cm. J.C. Muller A.G., Zurich.
Condition B+: tears and wrinkles in margins, some slightly affecting image; minor loss along upper edge; creases in margin and image. Paper.
Just after the war, Leupin worked for Steinfels, a company that owned several brands of soap powder. He abandoned the hyper-realistic images of the Neue-Sachlichkeit style and embraced the clean, simple graphics of the post-war era. By using strong text, vibrant colors and bold graphics, Leupin simplified the images to achieve maximum impact. Here, colorful and highly stylized clothespins seem to float on a purple background along with the flashy white typography of the brand name. Dark, elongated shadows anchor both the text and the images and create a feeling of depth and perspective. The seemingly arbitrary placement of the text and objects in the poster, along with the careful alignment of colors, achieves a whimsical effect. Leupin pg. 116.
