HERBERT LEUPIN (1916-1999) FUSSBALL-STADION. 1954.
49 1/2x35 inches, 126x89 cm. Fropenius A.G., Basel.
Condition A: restored pin-holes in corners.
Herbert Leupin's versatile style runs the gamut from the Neue-Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) of Niklaus Stoecklin to the cartoon-like whimsy of Raymond Savignac. By the time Leupin opened his own studio in 1939, he had already studied in Basel and then with Paul Colin in Paris (1936-37). This 1954 poster is a masterpiece of simplicity, combining his two primary influences into one powerful poster. The effectiveness and timeless of the image is evident because Leupin reused it, with a different layout, for Sport Toto in (1959) and Michel Quarez employed a similar concept of feet and a ball for St. Denis 1998 World Soccer championship in Paris.
