HERBERT MATTER (1907-1984) GLARNERLAND & WALENSEE. Circa 1935.
Ringier & Co., Zofingen.
Condition A.
Born in Switzerland, Matter spent time in Paris where he studied with Leger and Ozenfant and met Cassandre. In 1935 he opened a photo studio in New York and went to work for Harper's Bazaar, Knoll and many other companies. He also became a professor at Yale. This poster is part of the extraordinary series of Swiss travel posters he made from 1934-36, all of which consisted of close-up images that seem to spring at the public, against a background of clever montages. They simply revolutionized both the concept of the travel poster and the nature of photographic advertising images. From Matter's well-documented series of Swiss travel posters, this image is one of the rarest and least referenced. It is classically organized, depicting an old mountaineer within a verdant Alpine valley beneath sharp blue skies. What makes it unusual are the saturated colors used for the vegetation and the distorted cows grazing in the middle, which together create a strange photomontage effect.
