HERBERT MATTERWINTER FERIEN / SCHWEIZ. 1936.
40 1/4x25 3/8 inches.
Condition B: repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image.
A woman's face, smiling in the Alpine sunlight, half-shielded by a visor is super-imposed over blue and white images of skiers and a mountain, with two red Swiss crosses; lettering in dark green. A photo-montage by the Swiss master who employed this avant garde technique to create a series of travel posters for his native country. "Matter evokes the clear sky and white snow of Switzerland in a manner that emphatically asserts the modernity and sophistication of the country" (Word & Image p. 59). German version. Word & Image p. 74.
