Known for small-scale, modernist landscapes that represent the jumble of textured urban architecture, Herman Rose was born in Brooklyn and worked much of his career in New York. After assisting Arshile Gorky in the Works Progress Administration's Mural Division, he went on to teach at Brooklyn College, the New School of Social Research and the Pratt Institute.
