Known for small-scale, modernist landscapes that represent the jumble of textured urban architecture, Rose was born in Brooklyn in 1909. After assisting Arshile Gorky in the Works Progress Administration's Mural Division, he went on to teach at Brooklyn College, the New School of Social Research and the Pratt Institute.
