An apprentice at the printer Orell-Füssli and student of Keller in Zurich, Eidenbenz worked both in Germany and Switzerland, opening a studio with his brother in Basel in 1932. He was one of the first generation of Swiss designers who applied photography and sans-serif typography in advertising. Unlike many of his other designs, this poster, which promotes reading, takes a totally different, sensitive approach toward conveying its message. The photograph of the young girl is placed along the diagonal. But the image gains its strength, and keeps from being naïve and sentimental, through the curious coloring Eidenbenz applies to the image, as well as the unusual, elaborate amorphous shadows in the background.
