HERMANN KEIMEL (1889-1948)

MUENCHNER / PLAKAT KUNST. 1931.

47x33½ inches, 119½x83¾ cm. Chromolithographische Kunstanstalt, Munich.
Condition A-: minor repaired tears at edges. Framed.

After studying art at the Munich Academy under Julius Diez and Angelo Jank, Keimel went on to become a teacher at the same institution. He was a member of the artistic group "The Twelve," and also of the new Munich Association of Poster Artists. He designed numerous commercial posters, generally employing a crisp Art Deco style. This poster is his masterpiece and remains an icon of poster self-promotion. To promote an exhibition of Munich poster art, Keimel plays a geometrical game and constructs a cubist face out of colored sheets of printing paper, establishing "maximum content with [an] economy of expression" (Rademacher p. 31).
