HERMANN KEIMEL (1889-1948) MUENCHNER / PLAKAT KUNST. 1931.
47x33 1/2 inches, 119 1/2x83 3/4 cm. Chromolitho Kunstanstalt, Munich.
Condition B+: repaired tears at edges; restoration along horizontal fold.
After studying art at the Munich Academy under Julius Diez and Angelo Jank, Keimel went on to become a teacher at the same institution. He was a member of the artistic group "The Twelve," and also of the new Munich Association of Poster Artists. He designed numerous commercial posters, generally employing a crisp Art Deco style. This poster is his masterpiece and remains an icon of poster self-promotion. To promote an exhibition of Munich poster art, Keimel plays a geometrical game and constructs a cubist face out of colored sheets of printing paper. Weill p. 173, Rademacher cover and p. 117, Kunst p. 238, Verfuhrungen 131.
