HERNANDO G. VILLATHE CHIEF. Circa 1930. Oil painting on board maquette.
39x29 inches.
Condition B+: discoloration along right edge; restored losses in corners.
"The Chief<>" was the Santa Fe Railroad's high speed train running from Chicago to Los Angeles, and by associating the train with a powerful Western image, Villa bestows a sense of nobility, strength and pride upon the railroad. This maquette is almost identical to the finished poster. The only differences are in the text (the poster reads "the Chief...is still chief / extra fast-extra fine-extra fare"), the location of the Santa Fe logo, and the clasp on the Chief's bonnet, which on the poster bears the inscription "Santa Fe".
