HERZL, THEODOR. Autograph Letter Signed, "Th. Herzl," to professor of philology Ignatz Knopfelmacher, in German, hoping to secure him as tutor to his children beginning next year. 1 page, 8vo, personal stationery, with integral blank; short closed separations at folds, faint scattered foxing, faint scattered offsetting, remnants of cello tape mount at lower edge verso. With panel form the original envelope addressed in holograph, with cancelled orange Austrian 6-heller postage stamp featuring profile of Kaiser Franz Joseph I. Vienna, 10 March 1902.

In full: "Since our children's current teacher told us that it was difficult for him to find a replacement in the middle of the school year, we have decided to keep him until the exam.
"For next year, however, we want to entrust our children's lessons to you and will allow ourselves to inform you in good time."
Herzl's three children, Trude, Hans, and Pauline were only 10, 12, and 14 years old when their father died of congenital heart disease in 1904. A few years later, their mother died after a short and often unhappy life as part of a family struck repeatedly by mental illness. The children each died young and tragically: Hans and Pauline both died by suicide in 1930, and Trude was murdered at a Nazi concentration camp in 1943.
