HESSE (DATES UNKNOWN) WERBESCHAU. 1927.
35 1/2x24 inches, 90x61 cm. Graf & Schumacher. Dusseldorf.
Condition A.
This bold, figurative image is a fantastic example of the modernist design and typography emerging in Germany towards the end of the 1920s. Promoting an advertising show, the artist illustrates a rooster, whose morning call is alerting everyone to the show. In only two colors, it is highly stylized and effective. The blue circle in the lower right corner serves to provide the date and address of the exhibition but also suggests an exclamation point, adding even further emphasis to the already strong image. No biographical information exists about Hesse.
