MacLeay (1802-78) was a miniaturist and founding member of the Royal Scottish Academy. From its inception Hill & Adamson's collaboration was an artistic enterprise marked by portraits powerful in characterization. According to Helmut Gernsheim: "They have grandeur and originality; they are, in short, imbued with the quality of Old Masters."
