HIRSCHFELD, ALBERT (1903-2003) Arthur Rubinstein. Ink on paper. 18 x 24 inches. Caricature of the famous Polish-American concert pianist for The New York Times, January 5, 1969. Signed "Hirschfeld3" lower center. Unframed. As the chief cartoonist of The New York Times, Al Hirschfeld was America's premier theatrical caricaturist. He had the remarkable ability to capture the essence of a performer in a minimum of swirling lines. He also played a well-known game with his Times readers by hiding his daughter Nina's name in the drawing and indicating how many times he included it at the end of his signature. Thus "Nina" can be found three times in this picture. Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1987) is considered to be one of the greatest pianists of all time, especially celebrated for his interpretation of Chopin. Hirschfeld reworked the drawing as a limited signed lithograph in 1981, but without the flourish of the right hand and with the signature repositioned. 1969
