HOGENBERG, FRANS. Deutschlanndt - Germaniae Typus. Double-page engraved map of Germany. 363x474 mm plate size (notably smaller than the Ortelius); old hand-color in full; several repairs on verso, edges nicked with some marginal loss. [?Antwerp: Frans Hogenberg, 1576]

Additional Details

Presumably this is the Hogenberg map on which Ortelius based his almost identical image. There are several ways to differentiate the map from van den Broecke 57; the cartouche has only four steps underneath, not five; many of the toponyms are in different arrangement compared to the Ortelius, see for instance "Burgundia" directly to the right of the cartouche; the plate size is also more than 10 mm smaller on each dimension. The map came to us with three others, all of which were most likely extracted from a composite atlas of circa 1576.
