Additional Details

Alvin Carl Hollingsworth (1928-2000), comic strip illustrator and modern painter, was born in New York City. In the mid-nineteen fifties, Hollingsworth left a lucrative career in comics to paint fine art. He is known for addressing Civil Rights and other contemporary social issues in his work. The present piece shows a highly stylized Black Panther woman, with a prominent Afro and startlingly blank, blue eyes; all around her are fragments of words. His paintings have been hung in the Brooklyn Museum, Jewish Museum, Museum of African Art in Washington, and several prominent galleries.
