HOLTROP, WILLEM; and other publishers. [Miniature composite atlas]. 58 double-page engraved maps in fine original hand-color. 12mo, 5x3 1/4 inches, contemporary calf with rolled gilt rules, a simply etched compass rose-styled design to each cover and a plain "Atlas" spine label, covers detached; Sepp world map with a repaired tear, several maps with upper and lower margins extended (ie for period binding), light browning and an occasional spot of foxing but generally very nice. [Amsterdam, circa 1780]
A fine miniature world atlas with maps published variously by Arent and Gerard van Huissteen, Arend Fokke Simonsz, Steven van Esveldt, Theodorus Crajenschot and Willem Holtrop. Many of the maps bear engraved signatures by Christiaan Sepp, Jan van Jaegn, and Hendrik Klockhoff and are dated between 1747 and 1778. The continent maps of Europe, Asia, and Africa are represented by an example each of Fokke and Huissteen's versions. The final map is a beautiful petit rendering of the British possessions in North America with an inset of Jamaica. Atlases of this nature have seldom appeared on the market, and those that have surfaced generally contain more in the range of 45 maps, as compared to the 58 presented here. Despite the detached covers, it is a dandy little book.
