Additional Details

This ornate world map by Hondius and Jansson shows California as an island, and is celebrated for its highly decorative border representing the four elements and depicting images of Caesar, Ptolemy, Jodocus Hondius and Mercator in the corners. The map was issued in every Mercator-Hondius atlas from 1633-58, but the English edition was published in 1636. <
