Additional Details

Interesting geography, fantastic scenes of decoration, Renaissance strapwork and beautiful original color give this map sincere collectable appeal. North America retains its wide, enlarged projection common of the period while South America is notably slimmed down from its predecessors. The area of Virginia is rather oddly shaped, jutting into the ocean and creating a large bay above it. Many of the decorative elements are derived from De Bry's Grand Voyages: monsters, birds, ships, canoes and kayakers adorn the waters while the large inset in the lower left depicts a scene of South American women preparing Chicha, while the men are shown enjoying the fermented beverage off to the side. Burden 150.
