Additional Details

A fine example of this map from the Mercator/Hondius atlas in original color. The Dutch East India Company controlled the Southeast Asian spice trade for much of the seventeenth century. This map depicts their considerable influence on the area. Much of the cartography borrows from Plancius's groundbreaking Spice Map "Insulae Moluccae Celeberrimae", itself based on Portuguese manuscript charts (see lot 70).
