HONORÉ DAUMIER
La Journée du Célibataire.

Complete set of 12 lithographs sur blanc, 1839. 335x226 mm; 13 1/4x10 1/8 inches (sheet), full margins. Printed by Aubert, Paris. Published by Bauger, Paris.

The current lot, first published in Le Charivari between April 14 and September 15, 1839, illustrates the daily activities of a perpetual bachelor, Monsieur Coquelet. The series begins with his waking up at seven in the morning and ends at nine at night when he goes to bed. Coquelet lives a life of loneliess and stinginess, and Daumier imbues the series with his typical acerbic wit, critiquing the bachelor's alienation and lack of human connection. Delteil 607-618.
