HORACE TAYLOR (1881-1934) THE ROYAL MAIL LINE TO NEW YORK. Circa 1925.
40x24 3/4 inches, 101 1/2x63 cm. The Baynard Press, [London.]
Condition A-: minor staining and abrasions at edges; minor staining in central image; unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds.
Writing on the "Technique of the Poster," Taylor describes his theory on poster design which can be seen in perfect execution in this image for cruises to New York City. "The public likes these things [poster art] in their most obvious and commonplace aspects . . . what is more important is what the public remembers. Not perhaps so much what is actually remembered as what lingers in the sub-conscious memory . . . the more memorable things is, as in heraldry, the symbol . . . Before the poster can be remembered it must be seen . . . a bold silhouette in one or two colors will carry farther than a picture cut up into a hundred small patches of tone and colour" (Richmond pps 186-194). Richmond p. 182.
