Additional Details

Hosoe's Kamaitachi, a lavishly produced book with rich, dark photogravures and bright blue gatefolds, is predicated not only on Hosoe's retelling and re-imagining of the beguiling and bewitching weasel-like demon that haunts rice fields and slashes humans on encounter, but also on the fundamental experience of looking at the book. Each illustration must be uncovered and opened, and the sharp contrast between the blue and shades of blacks and grays adds to the theatricality of Hosoe's vision and photographs.
