Additional Details

Inscribed and Signed, "Harry Houdini Best wishes to John Mulholland." This striking silhouette was cut by Beatrix Sherman, one the the major figures in 20th century silhouette art. She practiced her art at expositions around the country and also had a shop briefly in Atlantic City. She is noted for her many cuts of celebrities, from royals to Hollywood stars. The silhouette was cut freehand in the early 1920s. A signed duplicate of this cut is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art as a posthumous bequest of the artist. A fuller history of Beatrix Sherman will be found in David Alexander's forthcoming book, History of 20th Century Silhouettes and Collectibles.<
