Hilscher finished his studies at the Warsaw Academy in 1955. He went on to become Art Director of Projekt, an influential magazine and one of the leaders of the Polish school of posters. His career spans three decades, and he is most remembered for the colorful and joyous Cyrk posters he designed in the 1970s. However, he also designed movie posters (largely in the 1950s) and at least this one commercial image for the Polish national airline. "As a student Hilscher had hoped to be an architect and his works incline toward geometry" (Susan Hornik, Smithsonian Magazine, January, 1983). This image presents stylized skyscrapers and a plane that appears to reflect the lights from the city below. If the image wasn't eye-catching enough, Hilscher uses an unrealistic but very effective gilt background.
