first edition. inscribed: "To Sargeant Johnson--who has given much beauty to our world, Sincerely, Langston Hughes. Carmel, August 14, 1934." Probably Carmel, California. Johnson lived in San Francisco. Sargeant Johnson's work was included in virtually all of the noted Harmon Foundation exhibits. The Dream Keeper is Langston Hughes' s rarest regularly published book. For some unaccountable reason, Knopf only printed 525 copies of this, his third book of poetry.
