HUGHIE LEE-SMITH (1915 - 1999)
Ballons.

Oil and pencil on linen canvas, 1992-94. 660x914 mm; 26x36 inches.

Provenance: the estate of the artist; thence by descent to the current owner.

In this late career series of paintings, Lee-Smith examined identity with a number of contrasts - pairing flat graphic depictions of African tribal masks with his social realist depictions of young people.

In 1994, Hughie Lee-Smith was commissioned to paint the official City Hall portrait of New York City Mayor David Dinkins. Lee-Smith had his career retrospective in 1988, organized by the New Jersey State Museum, which traveled to the Studio Museum in Harlem, and in 1997, a second retrospective at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art in Maine.
