In the early 1950s, Lee-Smith returned to Detroit from Chicago, worked in an automobile factory, and enrolled at Wayne State University. His address on the painting is just a few blocks from both Wayne State, where he earned a B.S. degree in 1953, and the Detroit Institute of Art, where he was awarded multiple painting prizes in the early 1950s.
