This unusual landscape by Lee-Smith has a sister landscape, Winter's Day, 1949, in the collection of Charles Storer, and illustrated in Leslie King-Hammond's monograph Hughie Lee-Smith. Both paintings have a wintry quietude and stillness, and lack even a hint of a human presence. Here Lee-Smith has focused on composition and color tonality within an elegant simplicity. King-Hammond p. 26, ill. 10.
