HUGHIE LEE-SMITH (1915 - 1999)
Wasteland.

Lithograph on cream wove paper, 1939. 203x250 mm; 7 7/89 7/8 inches, full margins. Proof, aside from the edition of 27. Signed, titled and dated in pencil, lower margin. A very good, dark impression of this scarce print, with the edges of the stone printing in the margin.

In 1943, art historian James Porter named Lee-Smith, alongside Robert Blackburn and James Lesesne Wells, as "the only three Negro printmakers who have sufficient command of lithography to produce fine prints and instruct others in the medium." Porter, p. 153.
